Whiplash

Whiplash and Auto Accident Injuries

Whiplash is a term commonly associated with injuries that occur during an auto or car accident. Another term commonly used to describe auto accidents is motor vehicle collision. When a person is in a rear end auto accident the movement that the head and neck goes through resembles the movement of a whip cracking. For diagnostic purposes whiplash is the same as neck sprain/strain. Many other types of injuries can occur during a car accident/motor vehicle collision. In my clinical experience I have noticed that the three most common types of pain arising from a car accident/motor vehicle collision are neck pain, back pain, and headache pain.

Listed below are some of the most common types of pain associated with motor vehicle collisions and what type of injury may be causing that pain.

Neck pain, Mid back pain, Low back pain

  1. Traumatic Spinal Sprain/Strain Injury
When a person is involved in an auto accident it causes unnatural, uncontrolled, or violent spinal movement. This may cause disruption (tearing) of the fibers of muscles, ligaments and tendons around the joint as well as disruption of the fibers of the joint capsule. For more details about traumatic spinal sprain/strain injuries click here.
  2. Intervertebral Disc Injuries
The spinal movements that occur during a car accident can cause a tremendous amount of pressure on the intervertebral discs. This may cause disc bulge/protrusion/herniation injuries and/or disc tearing. For more details about disc injuries click here.
  3. Risk of Neck Injury
Have you ever wondered why one person involved in an auto accident can have a more severe neck injury than another person who was sitting right next to them in the exact same accident? Click here for the answer.

Headaches

  • Neck injury, Muscle Spasm/Tension, and Concussion/Post-Concussive Syndrome
Headaches arising after an auto accident may be a result of injury to the neck, muscle spasm/tension on the back of the head, or concussion/post concussive syndrome effects. The headaches may also be a combination of the three. For more details about each of these types of headaches click here.

Pain, Numbness, Tingling, or Weakness in the Arms & Hands or Legs & Feet

  • Intervertebral Disc Injuries and Traumatic Spinal Sprain/Strain Injury
The nerves that travel to the arms, hands and fingertips originate in the neck. In addition, the nerves that travel to the legs, feet and toes originate in the low back. Disc injuries and traumatic spinal sprain/strain injuries in the neck and low back are common in auto accidents. Because the nerves that travel to the arms and legs originate in the neck and low back, injuring the neck and low back frequently cause nerve irritation. For more details about upper and lower extremity nerve irritation click here.

Shoulder Pain

  • Traumatic Shoulder Sprain/Strain
Shoulder injuries are common for drivers in a rear end auto collision. As the car is struck a driver instinctively grips the steering wheel tightly. Due to the impact, the car (and steering wheel) is thrust forward. If the patient is holding onto the steering wheel tightly their arms will be jerked forward which can dislocate the shoulder or tear muscles and ligaments in the shoulder. Shoulder injuries are common for passengers as well. When a passenger puts their hands out to brace for an impact it can cause excessive forces to pass through the shoulder, damaging muscles or ligaments in the shoulder. For more details about shoulder injuries click here.

Knee Pain

  • Knee injuries are also common in auto accidents. Front seat passengers frequently hit their knees on the dashboard. Rear seat passengers frequently hit their knees on the seats in front of them. A forceful blow can cause damage to major ligaments or menisci in the knee. For more details about knee injuries click here.
