Spondylolisthesis

Shifting of a Vertebra

Spondylolisthesis

A spondylolisthesis is when a vertebra in the spinal column has moved/shifted forward or backward in relation to the vertebra above or below it. Normally the vertebrae in the spine sit directly atop one another. A spondylolisthesis can be seen on an x-ray. Based on my clinical experience I believe that having a spondylolisthesis alone is not always painful. I can say, however, that having a spondylolisthesis increases a personís chance for having a painful spinal sprain/strain injury or disc injury because it weakens the segment by causing stretching and strain on the intervertebral discs, the ligaments, and the muscles between the vertebrae.

What are a few possible causes of spondylolisthesis?

  1. A person may be born with a genetic predisposition to having the bones grow or move in a way that causes a spondylolisthesis.
  2. Over time and with pressure the bones involved may erode and remodel causing the bones to lengthen, allowing the vertebrae to slip forward.
  3. Acute trauma causing a fracture in a specific location of the vertebrae, can allow the vertebrae to move forward.
