ScoliosisCurvature of the Spine
Scoliosis Scoliosis is a lateral curvature in the normally straight vertical line of the spine. More simply put, when looking at someone from behind it is a curve to the right or left in the spine. Scoliosis is most common in the mid back but also occurs in the low back. Based on my clinical experience I believe that not all cases of scoliosis cause pain. Scoliosis is best detected by examination with x-ray. What are a few possible causes of scoliosis? Unfortunately the cause of a majority of scoliosis cases is unknown. This type of scoliosis is called Idiopathic Scoliosis and usually occurs in the adolescent years. Though the cause of this type of scoliosis is unknown, there are several known risk factors for developing it. Some of the risk factors for developing scoliosis or having a scoliosis that will worsen over time are listed below.
Other rare or temporary causes of scoliosis include nerve disorders like cerebral palsy, muscle disorders like muscular dystrophy, bone growth disorders, spinal trauma resulting in broken bones and muscle spasm, infections, leg length inequality, and poor posture.
